FAT and SAT for Heat Tracing Systems
When a heat tracing system is delivered, the buyer has two acceptance gates: factory acceptance (FAT) of the panels and materials, and site acceptance (SAT) after installation. Knowing what to check at each gate prevents disputes and catches problems while they are still cheap to fix.
What FAT covers
FAT happens at the supplier before shipment and focuses on what can be verified without the pipeline:
- Panel build: components match the approved drawings, wiring and labelling correct
- Protection: breaker and RCD ratings as designed
- Control: thermostats/controllers configured; display and alarm outputs tested
- Spare cable and accessories: quantities and types match the order
- Documentation package: drawings, certificates, datasheets, test reports
What SAT covers
SAT happens on site after installation and insulation, and is where the tracing is proven:
| Check | Acceptance criterion |
|---|---|
| Insulation resistance per circuit | Above the agreed minimum, recorded |
| Continuity and earth continuity | Complete, no open circuits |
| Operating current per circuit | Within the design tolerance |
| Maintain temperature (heat-up test) | Reaches set point within the agreed time |
| Thermostat/controller settings | Match the design; documented |
| Alarm functions | Each alarm tested to the monitoring point |
| Labelling and drawings | As-built matches the installed system |
Documents to receive at acceptance
- As-built drawings and circuit schedule
- Test records per circuit with measured values
- Certificates for the equipment installed
- Operation and maintenance manuals
- Spare parts list and warranty terms
Practical advice
- Agree the acceptance criteria in the purchase order, not at the end.
- Witness the heat-up test in cold weather if possible; it is the only test that proves the system works under design conditions.
- Keep the records: they are the baseline for every future maintenance and for warranty claims.
- Do not accept "it works" without measured values.
Common disputes
- Missing certificates for specific models (certificate covers a different series).
- Test records without values, only "OK".
- Alarms tested locally but not to the DCS.
- Maintain temperature verified on a warm day.
- Spares supplied differ from the order.
