Heat Tracing for Hydrogen and New Energy Projects
Hydrogen projects bring heat tracing requirements that are easy to underestimate: very low temperatures for liquid hydrogen, precise temperature windows for fuel cells and electrolysers, and strict safety requirements around hydrogen leaks. This guide summarises what project teams should plan for.
Where heat tracing appears in hydrogen projects
- Water and feed lines to electrolysers (freeze protection, temperature control)
- Sample and analysis lines
- Liquid hydrogen transfer lines and cold boxes (insulation-dominated, but auxiliary lines need tracing)
- Fuel cell test benches and humidifier lines
- Compressor and storage auxiliary systems
- Fire water and utility lines in hydrogen plants
Design points
1. Cryogenic and near-ambient are different problems
Liquid hydrogen lines are dominated by insulation and vacuum; tracing protects instruments, samples and auxiliary water lines. Don't apply "pipeline heat tracing" logic to cryogenic service without specialist design.
2. Temperature windows are narrow
Electrolyser water and fuel-cell humidification have defined temperature windows; overshoot wastes energy and may affect performance. Use precise thermostatic control and verify sensor placement.
3. Hydrogen safety
Hydrogen has a wide flammability range. In classified areas the heat tracing must be certified (ATEX/IECEx), and the temperature class must consider hydrogen ignition; terminations and enclosures must be gas-tight.
4. Water quality and freezing
Feed water lines freeze quickly; maintain temperature just above freezing without overheating. Where water quality matters, avoid contamination from insulation or components.
5. Monitoring
New energy projects are data-rich: circuit monitoring and alarms can be integrated into the plant control system, which is easier to design in at the start than to retrofit.
Certification notes
| Requirement | Screening check |
|---|---|
| ATEX/IECEx certified equipment | Certificates cover the exact models; temperature class verified for hydrogen |
| Temperature class | Surface temperature stays within the class for the gas group |
| Termination protection | Gas-tight enclosures; correct glands |
| Control and alarms | Approved for the classified area or installed outside it |
