Heat Tracing Project Cost: 7 Factors That Drive the Price
Two heat tracing quotes for the same pipe list can differ by a factor of two — and both can be technically correct. The gap is usually in the scope, not in the cable price. These are the seven factors that actually drive project cost.
1. Cable type and power
Self-regulating, constant wattage and MI cable have different price levels per metre. Higher power per metre and higher temperature ratings cost more. A design that over-specifies power "for safety" pays twice: cable cost and energy cost.
2. Circuit count and control
More circuits mean more breakers, more thermostats and more installation work. A design with 20 short circuits and one with 6 longer circuits may use the same cable length but very different control costs. Zone control adds value but also cost.
3. Insulation and cladding
Insulation is often 20–40% of the total system cost, and it is usually supplied by a different contractor. Cheaper insulation that is under-thickness will increase the cable power required — a false saving.
4. Accessories and terminations
Junction boxes, termination kits, glands, labels and supports are small items that add up. In hazardous areas, certified accessories cost more and cannot be substituted.
5. Installation conditions
Height, scaffolding, hot work permits, working in an operating plant, night shifts and shutdown windows all affect installation cost. A quote based on "empty plant, easy access" is not comparable with one based on reality.
6. Certification and documentation
ATEX/IECEx certificates, declarations of conformity, installation manuals in the project language, test records and as-built drawings are part of the deliverable. Cutting documentation is a false saving at handover.
7. Testing, commissioning and training
Insulation resistance tests, cold-start current records, alarm tests and operator training are usually the first items removed from a budget — and the first items missed at handover. Include them explicitly.
How to compare quotes properly
| Item | Ask each supplier |
|---|---|
| Cable | Type, power at maintain temperature, length |
| Circuits | Number, breaker rating, thermostat type |
| Insulation | Thickness, material, included or excluded |
| Accessories | List with quantities |
| Installation | Included or excluded, assumptions |
| Certification | Which certificates, which models |
| Testing | What tests, who witnesses, what records |
The lowest price is rarely the lowest cost. Compare scope line by line before comparing totals.
