Heat Tracing for Sewage Lift Stations and Wastewater Networks

INTAYE Technical Library · Jiangsu Intaye Electric Co., Ltd. · 2026-10-07

Sewage lift stations, pump stations and wastewater force mains fail in winter in ways that are expensive and unpleasant: lines freeze, pumps run dry and burn out, and the failure is discovered as a spill. Heat tracing is a small part of the fix, but an important one.

Where tracing is used

Design points

1. The risk is not only freezing water

Intermittent flow means water can sit in a rising main for long periods. Trace the exposed sections and insulate them; where a main runs in shallow cover, consider insulation and protection rather than relying on ground temperature.

2. Pump protection

A frozen discharge can make a pump run against a blocked line. Alarms on tracing plus level/flow interlocks protect the pumps as much as the pipe.

3. Corrosive and wet environment

Wet wells and pump rooms are humid and corrosive; use sealed enclosures, corrosion-resistant jackets where needed, and mount junction boxes clear of flooding level.

4. Chemical dosing lines

Some dosing chemicals crystallise or freeze; maintain the supplier's temperature window and avoid local overheating.

5. Control

Thermostatic control with alarm to the SCADA or telemetry system. Remote sites are exactly where an unnoticed failure becomes a spill.

What buyers actually ask before ordering

Objections and questions repeat across markets. The five below come up in most first conversations, and answering them early shortens the cycle:

QuestionWhat the buyer really wants to know
"What is the price per metre?"Whether the total system cost fits the budget — cable is often a minor part of panel, accessories and installation.
"Can you deliver in two weeks?"Whether the project schedule is at risk; standard cable may be fast, but panels and certification take longer.
"Is it certified for our zone?"Whether the certificate covers their gas group and temperature class, not just "ATEX".
"Can we use our existing panel?"Compatibility of voltage, breaker sizing, control philosophy and alarm wiring.
"Who supports it after handover?"Spare parts availability, warranty terms and local service.

Where the specification usually goes wrong

These are not commercial details — each one changes cable selection, panel design or certification scope, and therefore the price. A specification that answers them is faster to quote and cheaper to build.
