How to Choose Heat Tracing Cable: Self-Regulating vs Constant Wattage vs MI
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the maximum surface temperature of heat tracing cable?
Our heat tracing cables reach a surface temperature of up to 150 C. For higher process temperatures we supply high-temperature grades rated up to 260 C.
2. Can heat tracing raise the medium temperature significantly?
Heat tracing cannot heat a medium from ambient to 100-200 C on its own. It maintains an existing temperature and prevents freezing or solidification. If the medium enters at about 100 C, the cable can hold that temperature.
3. Which maintains a higher temperature: detachable or non-detachable cable?
Non-detachable (MI / series) cable maintains higher temperatures - linear maximum maintain temperature 450 C, withstand 600 C. With a thermostat it holds 130 C stably.
4. What are the parameters of the 60 W/m cable in stock?
The 60 W/m cable in stock has a linear maximum maintain temperature of 205 C and withstand temperature of 260 C.
5. Can a 60 W/m cable heat an empty pipe to 150 C?
No. A 60 W/m cable cannot reach 150 C on an empty pipe; the heat loss to the environment exceeds the cable output.
6. What insulation thickness is needed to maintain 130 C?
Maintaining 130 C requires at least 80 mm of insulation. 20 mm is far too thin - the heat loss cannot be offset.
7. Which type is used for outdoor water pipe freeze protection?
Self-regulating cable is normally used: it can be cut to length on site, will not overheat if overlapped, and is available in 12 V / 24 V / 220 V versions.
8. How do I size the cable for a given pipe?
Send us pipe diameter, pipe length, maintain temperature, minimum ambient temperature and insulation thickness. We return a heat loss calculation, cable selection, circuit layout and bill of materials within 24 hours.
