Heat Tracing Control Panel: What to Specify
A heat tracing control panel is where most projects lose money quietly: underspecified panels arrive with the wrong breakers, no circuit monitoring, no alarm path, and no space for the next phase. These are the points to fix in the specification before the order.
1. Circuit protection and selectivity
Each circuit should have its own protection sized to the cable type and length. Specify breaker type (MCB, RCBO with 30 mA for self-regulating cable where required), short-circuit rating and whether earth leakage protection is per circuit or per group.
2. Control philosophy
Decide whether control is by thermostat per circuit, by group controllers, or by a PLC/SCADA system. For self-regulating cable, line-sensing thermostats are usual; for critical lines, dual sensors with alarm are common. Write down the set points and alarm thresholds.
3. Monitoring and alarms
Specify what is monitored: current per circuit, earth leakage, temperature high/low, controller failure, supply failure. Then specify the alarm destination — local lamp, buzzer, DCS, fire panel or on-call phone.
4. Panel construction and environment
Indoor or outdoor, IP rating, ambient temperature range, material (sheet steel, stainless, GRP), cable entry from top or bottom, and whether the panel sits in a hazardous area (in which case it needs Ex certification or must be placed outside the zone).
5. Spare capacity
Leave 20–25% spare ways and space for future circuits. Retrofitting into a full panel is far more expensive than buying ten extra ways at the start.
6. Documentation and labeling
Require circuit schedules, wiring diagrams, terminal numbering, device labels and a copy of the settings. A panel without documentation is a maintenance liability.
7. Testing before shipment
Specify factory tests: insulation resistance, functional test of each circuit, alarm simulation, and a test report. Factory testing is cheaper than site troubleshooting.
